Joe and Reine are frequently told that their home looks like a museum inside, so we thought it would be a spectacular kick-off for our exciting 2012 Summer Home Tour schedule. Recently several of Joe’s colonial ivories were featured in our museum’s “New Mexico Collects” exhibit (see photo above), so this is your chance to see the rest of his ivory collection. It is the variety of their extensive collections that is so impressive and interesting, whether it be Spanish Colonial, contemporary Santos, early California impressionist paintings, Native American pottery or a dash of Victorian, these knowledgeable collectors have something for every taste with a lot of history and background to accompany their pieces. Their exquisite taste exhibited in their various collections is something not to be missed!

Mark your calendars now for the special home/art tours planned for this summer. The home tours were a big hit last year and we think we have some wonderful surprises for you this year. The tours are restricted to members-only and will be filled on a first come, first reserved basis. All of the homes are in the Santa Fe area except for the September tour, when we visit a lovely home with a wonderful art collection in Albuquerque. Tickets are $35 per person per home tour. To reserve and pay for attendance, please call Janella Marsh at 505-982-2226, Ext. 103.

New Deal Art: CCC Furniture and Tinwork Exhibit Now Open!

EXHIBIT On View Through September 30th, 2012

The Museum of Spanish Colonial Art and Bandelier National Monument present an exhibit showcasing the work of CCC-trained craftsmen, including furniture, furnishings, and decorative tin. From 1933-1940, CCC workers at Bandelier National Monument built and furnished 31 buildings. The furniture and tinwork created for these buildings illustrate an extraordinary combination of traditional and early 20th century design and demonstrate the expertise of the craftsmen. Some 24 pieces of furniture and 15 pieces of decorative tin are exhibited along with photos of CCC woodworkers, measured drawings of the pieces, and the names of many of those who were enrollees at the Bandelier camp.

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed Emergency Conservation Work legislation to put the many unemployed of the country to work. Thousands of New Mexicans, destitute from the Depression and a historically cash-poor economy, were able to take advantage of this program, later known as the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), owing to New Mexico’s recent Statehood. Not only was the training given the many young men in CCC camps life-altering, but the Federal government helped to validate the traditional arts by incorporating them into its programs. These Federal programs served to sustain and revitalize the traditional arts of Hispano New Mexico, and their legacy is still apparent today.

Click here for a good summary of information about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

The “New Deal Art: CCC Furniture and Tinwork” exhibit has been designated a We the People project by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Programs for the exhibition, including tours, a lecture series and symposium, are funded in part by a grant from the New Mexico Humanities Council.

Kevin Burgess de Chavez is a native New Mexican whose rich heritage has heavily influenced this self-taught artist in the traditional styles and techniques of new mexican metal work. His family tree traces back to Bernardo de Miera y Pacheco (his great great Grandfather) who is referred to as the first new mexican santero and cartographer of New Mexico. One can understand why art is in his blood. While living in Germany and Spain and traveling throughout Europe, he absorbed many ideas from those cultures which also expanded his artistic world. His work can go beyond the traditional and explore many facets of metal work. His sculptures and metal work have been shown at various galleries and museums including: the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, Go Mama Go in Washington D.C., the Santa Fe Museum of Fine Art, along with: Amapola and Sumner & Dene Galleries in Albuquerque, NM, the Museum Stores in Santa Fe, NM and the Gallery Store at the Albuquerque Museum. Kevin was named one of Albuquerque’s Local Treasures in 2008.
